Demos or Pre-Releases are early builds of games within The Return to Freddy's series, either of games that would later release, or would never be finished/released. These builds may contain differences or cut content that didn't make their way into the final game, and as a result, are extremely valuable and are highly wanted within the community.

Be aware that this is not a full list of all the demos, as some builds may not be known about. As well as this, some of the builds may not be available, as they are lost. Lost builds are listed as such, and more detail can be found on these builds in the Lost Media page. If you have any builds that you believe are lost or undocumented, please get in contact with an archivist immediately.

FNaF 3 Fan-Made[]

FNaF 3 Fan-Made was the second iteration of the game, where Tyler decided to change the name to avoid confusion, when the official FNaF 3 was in development. Later, Scott Cawthon contacted Tyler asking him to change the game's name completely so that no more possible confusion could occur, with Tyler deciding to rename the game to "The Return to Freddy's". This build has notable differences between the two main iterations of the game.

The list of differences are as follows:

  • The monitor drained the player's power much faster in the original version of the game in comparison to how it was in the rebranded version. This change carried over to the game's final rebranding.
  • The jumpscare noise was originally completely different in the original version of the game. The one originally used was taken from a fan-made Five Nights at Freddy's 3 trailer created by a animation group called "GoldenLane Studio", while the scream used in the rebranded version of the game is the one from Five Nights at Freddy's 2. This change carried over to the game's final rebranding.
  • The Custom Night icons for Bonnie and Chica were also taken directly from the original Five Nights at Freddy's in the original version of the game, while in the rebranded version of the game, their icons are taken directly from Five Nights at Freddy's 2 (although Bonnie's is edited to include her face). This change carried over to the game's final rebranding.

Alpha[]

The Alpha Test was the first known version of the game, made around January 20th, 2015. It was sent out to YouTubers such as LuigiKid, RiskRim and IULITM. Unlike the final game, the game is mostly comprised of Photoshopped images similar to the first The Return to Freddy's. The build itself was never released officially by Tyler Ahlström, but eventually got released by Toonster on May 30th, 2015 after contacting one of the testers about the Alpha builds. The build can be downloaded here.

The list of differences are as follows:

  • Most of the rooms in game are based on pre-existing rooms from the original Five Nights at Freddy's and it's sequel, with some receiving slight edits to the posters to remove the Toy animatronics. The only exceptions are The Office and Main Hall, which were fully modeled but only vaguely resemble their counterparts in the final game.
  • The designs for the main characters are lifted from their original counterparts from the Five Nights at Freddy's games, with them being photoshopped into some of the rooms similarly to the first game.
    • Notably in this version, there are renders with extremely early models for Kitty FazCat and Sugar with the latter going unused.
  • The overall map layout is noticeably smaller compared to the final game, with some cameras from the final game being entirely missing.
    • There is a Parts/Service camera in the game files, but is not accessible in game.
    • The Main Hall in this version was referred to as the West Hall.
  • A Mute Call button shows up but at this point there were no phone calls done.
  • Unlike any of the other versions, the game has a power system which was lifted from the original The Return to Freddy's. Much like that game, you aren't able to regenerate the power.
  • Similarly to the original The Return to Freddy's, the game requires you to save manually using F5 and F6 on the title screen.
  • Pressing "New Game" does not do anything.
  • Although unused, there are menu frames for each night much like the first game due to the save system working the same way, with it going up to four stars. This implies that there were initially intending to be 8 nights in the game, much like the first game.
    • There are also 6 AM screens for each of those nights as well, despite it being unused. This implies in the back end that the game was supposed to function very similarly to how the first game did, with each night and each title screen being it's own separate frame.
  • Most of the sound design in this version doesn't at all resemble the final game, with the title screen theme being an edited version of the main menu themes from Five Nights at Freddy's and it's sequel. An earlier version of the game's jumpscare sound is also used here.
  • Unlike the final game, the game runs at a cap of 1000 FPS compared to it being locked at 60.
  • Similarly to the first game, the AI system works much like the original with the characters being scripted to come towards you one at a time. Unlike the first game, clicking the camera buttons does not speed up their AI in anyway.
  • While inaccessible, there are four minigames in this version of the game.
    • The first three are rough remakes of the minigames from Five Nights at Freddy's 2, being the Give Cakes minigame featuring Freddy Fazbear, the Give Gifts Give Life minigame featuring the The Puppet, and the Pirate Cove minigame with Foxy. The only major difference in these three is that BFP is featured in the last one alongside the other kids.
    • The fourth one is an original minigame featuring BFP looking at what appears to be a computer while crying. After 30 seconds, the minigame ends. Due to the game running at a high framerate, the animation of him crying may end up playing too slow or not play at all.
  • The cutscenes in this version of the game are completely different, featuring you as the Puppet in the main stage. Only the first one is able to be played normally, but ones for each night all exist in the games code. The second one features Golden Freddy come up to you, while the third one has Shadow Lockjaw come up to you. The fourth and fifth ones simply feature The Puppet crying.
    • Each one has a message following the cutscene ending. The first one says "ERROR", the second one says "MISS ME?", the third says "I AM YOU, BUT ARE YOU ME?", the fourth saying "I'M SORRY", and the fifth saying "It's okay my love, mommy's here to protect you...".

Final Alpha[]

The Last Alpha Test was a build of the game made on January 24th, 2015. Unlike the first alpha, this was sent out to more people. This is notably the last version of the game to rely on the photoshop style from the first The Return to Freddy's in favor of the game being fully 3D modeled. Much like the first alpha, the build itself was never released officially by Tyler Ahlström, however, was eventually released by Toonster on May 30th, 2015 after contacting one of the testers about the Alpha builds. The build can be downloaded here.

The list of differences are as follows:

  • Freddy's design was changed slightly in game to use an edit of him with the eyes of Springtrap from the first teaser of Five Nights at Freddy's 3, similarly to how he looks on the game's title screen. He also looks noticeably darker.
  • A phone call was recorded and added for Night 1, which ended up being reused for the next two versions of the game.
  • A music box mechanic was being worked on but ultimately doesn't function correctly, as it depletes but cannot recharge. The AI for the Puppet in this version was not implemented either.
  • Pressing "New Game" now functions, and takes you to the newspaper.
  • The manual save and load keys were changed from F5 and F6, to N and M respectively.
  • The fourth minigame is slightly altered, with numbers now being in the corner of the screen which end up slowly changing to the digits "2268". For a split second at the end of the cutscene, his sprite suddenly changes to one of Shadow Lockjaw.
  • The unused menu frames up to Night 8 were removed from the game.
    • Weirdly enough, the 6 AM screens for those nights were not removed from the game.
  • Golden Freddy was apparently worked on at this point in the game's development, with an edit of him in the office being made alongside a jumpscare animation, however he does not function in this version of the game.
  • A cupcake was added to the desk in the office.
  • The cutscenes were changed slightly, now featuring a sound that plays when you scroll left and right. One of the ambience tracks from Five Nights at Freddy's 2 was replaced in favor of featuring audio of kids singing "London Bridge Is Falling Down", which appears in each cutscene although with different portions of the song.
    • Interestingly enough, this was subtly hinted at by BFP during this point of the game's development.[1]

Trailer Build[]

The Trailer build was a build that was seen in the trailer for TRTF2. It was rumored that a build of this version was released onto Game Jolt, but this appears to be unlikely as the beta for the game did not drop until February 15th, and by that point the game's visuals were completely overhauled. However, there are screenshots for this build was shown by a user Scrafford King on YouTube, where the video showcases the gameplay screenshots for this build from early stages of the game. This build most likely came out in between the final alpha and the beta build of the game.

Beta[]

The beta version, or more commonly known as the Demo was the first publicly released build of the game on February 15th, 2015.[2] It is first version of the game to not primarily use Photoshopped renders, and uses proper 3D models for the characters and environments. Unlike the final game, the demo was released on both Game Jolt and IndieDB. The build can be downloaded here.

The list of differences are as follows:

  • The characters have completely different designs compared to the final game, with some looking more bulkier.
  • The phone calls use a more earlier take compared to the final game, with the quality of them sounding more closer to the first The Return to Freddy's.
  • Compared to the Alphas, the overall map layout is much closer to the final game, featuring the additions of both Parts/Service and the East Hall.
  • The power system from the alphas were reworked into the Generate Power system in the East Hall, which was later used in the final game.
  • The music box now functions correctly, with AI for The Puppet being added. The music box theme was also changed, now using a cover of the FNAF2 Music Box theme done by Sigrid Rodriguez.
  • The game now ditches the manual save system from the first game, in favor of an automatic save system.
  • Much like the first alpha, there are unused menus for up to 4 stars in the game. This once again implies that the game was supposed to go up to 8 nights.
    • Unlike the alphas though, an early version of the game's custom night screen featuring the earlier models is there but inaccessible. Oddly though, Dug is absent from this menu.
  • Golden Freddy was added to the game and functions, however due to a bug the mask does not defend against him.
  • Most of the sound design for the game use different sounds compared to the final game, with the title screen using a different song.
  • Although unused, there are multiple minigames included in this version. The four from the game's alpha are here with some slight edits to their sound design and sprite work, however a fifth one was made featuring Balloon Boy who was never shown in game. The minigame in question features him touching falling balloons to bounce them back into the sky. The minigame itself doesn't have an ending planned, and goes on endlessly.
  • The audio in the cutscenes were changed once again, removing the "London Bridge Is Falling Down" audio in favor of returning the ambience track from the cutscenes in Five Nights at Freddy's 2. Unlike how it was during the alphas however, it is no longer pitched down.
    • The text that appears after each cutscene ends were slightly modified, with the first one using the "err" text from Five Nights at Freddy's 2. The fifth one was also modified to instead say "It's alright my love, mommy's here...". The rest however were untouched, aside from them using a different font choice and no longer being in all caps.

Version 1.032 Build[]

Version 1.032 was an updated demo release that was uploaded on the Game Jolt page on February 26th, 2015.[3] The build was more closer to the final product, however there was a lot of noticeable differences as the build was made roughly a week before the game launched. Due to its short lifespan, it was rather hard to find outside of various gameplay videos from that timeframe. On December 4th, 2023, the build was re-released by Toonster after getting into contact with DragonDave17, who had played the build and was a beta tester for the game since the game's alpha. The build can be downloaded here.

The list of differences are as follows:

  • The environments are much more closer to the game's final release, however a lot of the camera angles are different than how they are in the final release. Most notably, the East Hall still uses a poster with an older render of the characters from the beta.
    • Interestingly, the West Hall was renamed in this version to the Main Hall.
  • The characters are now mostly on their final designs, the only oddity of those being Sugar who still uses her design from the Beta.
  • Most of the characters use different renders throughout the game, and noticeably are edited in the rooms, instead of them being rendered inside the rooms.
  • The toxic meter was redesigned to resemble how it ended up looking in the final game. However, due to a bug the meter only ends up getting a little under halfway before it kills you.
  • The main menu is now one frame, with it being updated dynamically depending on your progress. Due to it using the backend of the menu from FNAF2, the game now has 3 stars instead of the initially planned 4.
  • The cutscenes in this version were completely overhauled, with it instead using the cutscene system lifted from Five Nights at Freddy's 2. Unlike the final game, the cutscenes apparently take place on the Show Stage. This is most likely because the room wasn't finished at this point in time.
    • Although unused, Golden Freddy's sprite in the cutscene is just directly lifted from his appearance in FNAF2, rather than his model from the game.
  • The third rare screen uses a different render of Shadow Lockjaw, without Lockjaw.
  • The frame rate in this version of the game was officially capped at 60, and would remain this way in the final game.
  • Sugar's model in this version of the game still uses the model from the beta.
  • The jumpscares in this build do not use the final models, and still use the models from the beta.
    • Various renders made for the game such as the newspaper, and the unused win screens also use the beta models.
  • There are several unused renders for some of the characters, such as Golden Freddy in the office hallway which was removed from the final game.
  • Unlike the final game, the minigames used the ambience from FNaF2. This also includes the voice from the minigames, who spells out the phrases "SAVE THEM", "SAVE HIM", "HELP ME" and "HELP THEM".
    • This was most likely left in at the time due to the fact the minigame songs used in the final game, weren't publicly known due to them being from Five Nights at Freddy's 3 which wasn't released at the time of this demo.
  • Most notably, there are two renders for Spring Bonnie in the office that were completely removed from the final game entirely, as she was cut from the game last minute.
  • The phone calls from this version still use the phone calls from the Alpha/Demo version of the game, however in the case of Night 2, there is a completely unused phone call done by KidduTheMan.

Pre-Release[]

The Pre-Release test, or also known as the "Pre-Release :D" text as seen in the game, was a build for TRTF2. This build was uploaded on March 7, 2015, which was only seen by a user TwinklePhoenix, when she was sent by Tyler for the Pre-Release test build. The build was reuploaded by a Game Jolt user as of September 6th, 2023, which can be downloaded here.

Trailer Build[]

The Trailer Build, also known as the Alpha Test was a build seen in the official trailer for TRTF3. At 1:15 in the video before Bonnie's jumpscare, the office seems to be very dark and it used to have a ceiling. The desk, however, also had a different design compared to the final version.

Unknown Alpha Build[]

The Unknown Alpha Build was a build shown by user TwinklePhoenix on YouTube and appears to be an early alpha test of the game. The video in question can be found here.

Troll Game[]

The Troll Game is a build of the game made on April 1st, 2015. This build was made as a "demo" on April Fools' Day, where the player- controlling BFP wearing an odd brown mask- had to try to make it to the end of a grassy field, without getting killed by one of the grey things raining down from the sky. This is impossible through normal means, as the rain progressively gets thicker over time, to the point of being unavoidable. The only real way to win is by holding the "B+F+P+1" keys at the same time, which will teleport the player right next to the star at the end. The build can be downloaded here.

Interestingly, digging into the game's files will reveal textures for a Custom Night and a fourth star that would have appeared on the title screen.

TRTF3 Demo[]

TO BE ADDED

Pre-Release 3[]

Pre-Release 3 is a build of the game made around May 8th, 2015[4]. The build was made in several changes for the game that caused many bugs from the previous build.

The list of differences are as follows:

  • Golden Lockjaw plush was added for CD+ minigame
  • Vigo minigame was added
  • Added Night 8
  • Re-edited phone calls from nights 1 to 3.
  • Added new title screen music.
  • The fourth star was added when the player completes Night 8.

Pre-Release 3.5[]

Pre-Release 3.5 was a build of the game made around May 9th, 2015[5], that was made in small changes than Pre-Release 3.

The list of differences are as follows:

  • Vigo was improved.
  • The name for Vigo's minigame was added.
  • Improved Lockjaw that made him less aggressive.

Version 0.0.1[]

Version 0.0.1 was a build for TRTF4, not much is known about this build. The screenshot of the menu screen has different fonts compared to version 0.7.3 or the full game, which was mostly unfinished at the time. This is the only known screenshot of this build that was found in the comments from one of the posts for the TRTF3 Game Jolt page.[6]

Version 0.7.3[]

Version 0.7.3 was a build that was only seen on the early gameplay screenshots from the TRTF4 Game Jolt page. One of the screenshots also features Lockjaw staring at the player in the office, which was never seen in the full game. The build is currently lost, which it is presumed that the build was released privately, or has never been released on the Game Jolt page.

Version 0.9.9[]

Version 0.9.9, or more known as the Alpha Test is a build of the game made around May 17th, 2015. This version in particular is notable as this build was leaked a day after by multiple people, with the leak in question is what caused the game's initial release date of June 30th, 2015 to be pushed forward to May 19th, 2015.[7] Unlike the other builds mentioned here though, v0.9.9 is much closer to the final product with some very slight differences compared to the final game. The build can be downloaded here.

The list of differences are as follows:

  • The power drains significantly slower compared to the final game.
  • The main menu music is slightly different. The full song, being "Welcome to Chaos" by Ross Budgen, features a drop near the end of the song, however it is absent from this version of the game.

Title Screen Teaser Game[]

The Title Screen Teaser Game was a small teaser game that showed the early main menu for The Return to Freddy's 5 when it was known as The Return to Freddy's: Remastered. It showcases buttons for the player that presumably would have been able to use to access Story Mode, to load their game within Story Mode, to access Co-Op Mode, and a mode titled Sabani Mode. It is unknown what Sabani Mode would have been about. These buttons weren't capable of being interacted with however as well, but it's very likely they weren't.

Pre-Alpha Demo[]

The Pre-Alpha Demo was an early demo for The Return to Freddy's 5 (then known as The Return to Freddy's: Remastered) that was given out privately to several game testers around the middle of 2015. It consists of the title screen and an intro cutscene for TRTF:R, both of which have differences. The Title Screen is shown to have an area of Floor 1, with a swinging light illuminating the room, which wasn't seen in any other version of TRTF5/R.

If Story Mode were to be clicked you would be brought to an early version of the Intro Cutscene (which would later be scrapped anyway). A few differences are a different BFP/PoniatorKitty logo, the Torture Device cutscene ending at a different time than seen in the final game, a different logo featuring The Return to Freddy's: Remastered (which would later be changed to Rebooted before 5), and instead of being greeted by a short section showing the logo and creepy ambiance, the logo stayed up for much longer. The music was different in this version. The music would eventually go away and the logo would disappear. Afterward, either the game would go back to the title screen.

Trivia[]

  • The TRTF:R Title Screen Teaser Game is likely the first-ever version of TRTF 5/R to exist.
  • In the TRTF:R Pre Alpha the music at the end of the intro after the cutscene with Torture Device is actually the theme "Ever Mine" from Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs, but with a music box playing in the background.

Pre-Release 1[]

Pre-Release 1 was an early pre-release demo for The Return to Freddy's 5 (at the time known as The Return to Freddy's: Rebooted.) The main menu had three options, "Story Mode", "Load Story", and "Co-op Mode". Co-op mode was inaccessible, but clicking on Story Mode would lead the player to a small paragraph, before sending you to the outside of Fazbear INC. Once the player entered the building, they would be sent to an early version of Floor 1.

Pre-Release 2[]

Pre-Release 2, as the name suggests, is an updated version of the first pre-release. It features a new title screen, this time with Tortured Lockjaw standing with blue clouds. Noticeably, the co-op mode section has been removed, leaving only "story mode" and "load story." Clicking on story mode brings the player to a cutscene with the Torture Device slumped over, before the room begins to shake. After this cutscene ends, the player is simply sent to the same gameplay as pre-release 1, but with a noticeably updated Floor 1.

Pre-Release 3[]

Pre-Release 3 is the third pre-release of The Return to Freddy's 5, being an updated version of the previous pre-releases. The main menu is now updated to show all unlocked content, including co-op mode, G.P.D. Mode, and the extras. Clicking on co-op mode causes all menu text to disappear. Clicking on GPD mode sends the player to the GPD mode menu, which upon clicking any of the buttons, simply sends the player to a black screen, softlocking the game, which the only way to exit is closing the game and reopening it. Clicking on the extras menu sends the player to a computer screen, which turns on to show "jumpscares", "endings", "minigames", and "credits." The first three buttons do not work, while the fourth button lets the player select "normal', "bad", or "special" credits. Upon clicking story mode, the player is treated to the same Torture Device cutscene as pre-release 2. Once it is finished, the player is sent to a graphically overhauled version of the gameplay of the previous two pre-releases. It should be noted that the door at the end of the hallway on floor 1 is now locked, and the location of the key is unknown. Tortured Lockjaw can also appear behind the player, in which case they have to turn off their flashlight and turn around.

Abandoned Demo[]

The Abandoned Demo is yet another demo of The Return to Freddy's 5 made around October 12th, 2015. This build has the same title screen as pre-release 2 and 3, so it could be assumed that the abandoned demo was made soon before or soon after the pre-releases. Clicking on story mode brings the player to the Torture Device cutscene from pre-releases 2 and 3, the gameplay afterwards is a direct copy of pre-release 3, with no new additions.
